Never Forget

Where were You?

  1. I was at a customer's house doing an installation of shutters when my mother called and told me to turn on the tv. I remember quoting the REM song, "it's the end of the world as we know it".

  2. I was at home taking care of your younger brother and sister, wondering whether it would be better to to let you stay at your school or bring you home. I opted to have you finish your day, trying to keep it normal. Aside from the imagery that has by now become iconic, I have one very chilling memory. I stood outside on the front lawn, talking with many of our neighbors. We were gathered in a group, I suppose for reassurance and in an effort to make sense of it all. Both planes had hit the towers and by then all flights had been grounded. As we talked, though, we heard an airplane flying overhead. Such a common sound in Northeast Ohio that at first no one remarked on it. When we realized that it shouldn't be there, someone speculated that it must be a military flight. A few hours later that we learned that it was Flight 93 looping around over Cleveland on its diversionary flight toward Washington. Not too many minutes later, of course, it crashed at Shanksville. The sky was very blue, and the sun was shining. I still don't understand it.

  3. I was at work, listening to the radio when they started talking about it. At first the DJs thought it was a huge joke, and when they realized it wasn't - you could tell.
We had hit-or-miss internet access then, so I didn't really get to SEE the footage until I went to pick my daughter up from daycare. They had the TV in the infant room, since they were all too young to care, but the older kids figured out ~something ~ was going on. And of course my daughter asked what was wrong. It was tough trying to explain to an almost 4 year old so she could understand, but she got it. Some really bad people had stolen 4 airplanes and made them crash so LOTS of people died.
